Intimidating in their wizard garb, Mammatus earned cred in freak-out psych circles opening for Acid Mothers Temple and playing music inspired by '70s basement fascinations with natural disasters and magical creatures of the deep. The trio justifies its prog with genuine heaviness, and gives weight to its meandering, earnest jams with laser precision. Last year's The Coast Explodes hits so hard that its eco-fantasy tropes are not only legitimate, but absolutely sensible. Sleepy Sun open with skilled/stoned blues, and Lumerians groove like a grounded Spacemen 3.
