Film: Documentary Trembling Before G-d (2001)

After debuting on the festival circuit in 2001, Sandi Simcha DuBowski's compassionate documentary about the lives of gay and lesbian Hasidic and Orthodox Jews started a global conversation about how to reconcile faith and desire — if such a reconciliation is even possible. The film has been seen by an estimated eight million viewers around the world, meaning DuBowski has at least succeeded in opening up a dialogue on Judaism's complicated stance on homosexuality. That dialogue continues tonight at the JCC's East Bay center.
