Heather-cook-2008_large

In the sprawling text that accompanies the show, LA-based curator Sarah Lehrer-Graiwer makes large conceptual claims about Soft Underbelly Recognition — a group exhibition that spotlights artists who refuse "false binaries" and are committed to freeing time and space from its "cyclical obsolescence." But hidden under this dense layer of description is work that speaks boldly, even when it's not subject to exegesis. The artists unite around the common theme of pliability: Eduardo Consuegra constructs pop-influenced assemblages, Heather Cook drapes sensuous lengths of black cotton, Eli Langer makes abstract paintings that occupy unusual wall spaces, and Sidonie Loiseleux hangs creased sheets recalling origami.
