Impressionism has more than its fair share of great names: Monet, Degas, Renoir, Manet, and the list goes on. Less often acknowledged are female contributors like Berthe Morisot, Mary Cassatt, Eva Gonzalès, and Marie Bracquemond. Morisot was described as the "most Impressionistic of the Impressionists" for her soft-brushed style, and the American Cassatt's portraits of domestic scenes resonate with tenderness. Though these accomplishments may seem less impressive now, they were remarkable at the time. But the talent of these artists couldn’t halt cruel 19th-century realities — Bracquemond's career, for example, was stopped short by her artist husband Félix Bracquemond, and Eva Gonzalès died young during childbirth.
