Tatsumi Hijikata, the Japanese choreographer considered to be the founder of butoh, would have been 80 this year (Hijikata passed away in 1986). Emerging in Japan in the '60s as a new mode of physical expression, butoh twisted folk and Western dance techniques into a choreographed response to post-A-bomb existence. In honor of the master's octogenarian anniversary, Butoh San Francisco puts together two nights of performances that testify to the dance form's trans-Pacific status. Hijikata disciples Koichi and Hiroko Tamano of the renowned Harupin-Ha Butoh Dance Company (and proprietors of Mission sushi joint Country Station) present work alongside local companies SALT FARM, Bare Bones Butoh, and inkBoat — which is represented here by Shinichi Iova-Koga.
