Formed at the Alabama Institute for the Negro Blind in 1939, the Blind Boys, with their heavenly harmonies, are the gold-standard gospel group — a reputation that they cemented earlier this year with the uplifting collection Down in New Orleans. Backed by Big Easy standbys Allen Toussaint and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, the Boys turn standards like "Down by the Riverside" and "I'll Fly Away" into spirited testimonies to the city's ongoing struggle.
