Exit Sign confronts all the major thematic touchstones of a self-respecting rock opera: love, death, and the dubious nature of reality — all to ponder as the case breaks into song every ten minutes. San Francisco composer/director Carrie Baum leads Exit's father-and-daughter team on a deadly odyssey to save humanity, prompted by a strange, television-based entity. The rousing pop-rock orchestrations and chorus of bombastic voices nod to classic predecessor Hair and recent triumph Hedwig and the Angry Inch, while Baum's production gives it all a distinctly San Franciscan theatricality.
