Not much new can be said about punk. The gnarled, trans-Atlantic family tree running from Iggy Pop to Johnny Rotten, and from the Germs to Crass, has been uprooted to the point that any sense of punk's past — as a force to be reckoned with, as a threat — starts to feel pretty distant. Luckily, someone was filming the gigs. The clips in this four-part series are prime examples from the front lines: Amos Poe and Ivan Kral's footage of the class of CBGB's; the Sex Pistols' self-immolating 1978 tour; the Cramps performing for mental patients; and the hellish Los Angeles of The Decline of Western Civilzation.
