Jia Zhang-ke's films have always taken a gritty, neo-realist view of China's new position in the global economy, as well as the culture of commodities, migrant labor, and alienation that it has wrought. YCBA features two documentaries that come on the heels of Still Life (2006), a portrait of the Yangtze River's erasure. Useless' subject is ostensibly the fashion designer Ma Ke, but Jia uses her as a foil for a meditation on China's role as garment factory to the world. Dong, a companion piece to Still Life, follows artist Liu Xiaodong as he paints workers near the Three Gorges Dam.
