In spite of being a legendary Bay Area film aesthete, Warren Sonbert's movies have rarely been screened outside a couple of retrospectives after his death in 1995. The SF cineastes at kino21 step in with brief programs of the late artist-critic's films; the third and final focuses on two short works that toy with narrative mechanisms from two that genres he particularly adored: Hollywood melodrama and opera. Sonbert brought his Bolex camera to bear on all parts of his life, so, given his history of opera criticism and holding forth on Hitchcock and Douglas Sirk at the Pacific Film Archive, it's no surprise that these passions would turn up in his patented polyvalent montages.
