Early movie audiences in Japan expected silent films to be accompanied by both music and live narration performed by a katsudo benshi. The benshi were talented orators who interpreted — and frequently added poetic flourish — to the action on screen, rooting the cinematic experience in the traditional theatrical practices of kabuki and noh. Live film narration continues to exert a weird pull (and not just to anachronistic directors like Guy Maddin), as in kino21's neo-benshi cabarets. Tonight, seven writers and performers distort, exalt, subvert, and otherwise hijack a chosen film scene; Mary Poppins will never be the same again.
