sfSoundSeries kicks off its monthly concert run with an adventurous program of contemporary classical works. The influence of Steve Reich's drone-like phase-pattern compositions now extends far beyond the academy (take another listen to Animal Collective or Stereolab), but the radical simplicity of Four Organs still sounds fresh. Complemented by Italian composer Salvatore Sciarrino's 1997 piece Muro d'orizzonte, Giacinto Scelsi's Kya foreshadows the intensity that the Italian noble's microtonal swells achieve in his later orchestral works. The evening closes with a smaller-scale piece by Mauricio Kagel, a string solo by Alan Hilario, and a new collaborative work created by sfSoundSeries' house ensemble.
