While the Mission Creek Festival rocks San Francisco, Heeb magazine gives East Bay folks a good reason to stay put with four nights of shows at the Mama Buzz Café and Ghost Town Gallery, all benefiting the Ella Baker Center. On the local front, Assemble Head in Sunburst Sound crank their amps way past 11, Lazarus' dark swoons are a cinch for Nick Cave fans, and erstwhile Gris Gris frontman Greg Ashley plays intriguingly damaged folk. Bearing special mention, however, is the the generation-spanning bill closing the festival, which features freak-folk ancestor Ruthann Friedman alongside the latest astral harmonizers from Los Angeles, the Chapin Sisters.
