Dan Nelson's richly bound and weightily titled volume All Known Metal Bands is a staggering alphabetical grimoire of 51,000 groups that play the devil's music. The book's thoroughness is equaled by its stunning design — from its embossed cover to the silver ink that adorns its black pages, the tome is a beaut. Nelson's twisted labor of love is both an endearingly old-fashioned resource for trainspotters in the age of Google and a curious art object that courts its own obsolescence (how to account for future metal bands?). To celebrate its release, Nelson reads from his masterpiece, and DJs follow up with an appropriately dark selection of tunes.
