Reading Ethan Canin: America America

Though still best known for his short-story collections (Emperor of the Air, The Palace Thief), Ethan Canin is also an accomplished novelist. His latest is a self-conscious American epic recounting the campaign of a fictional Democratic challenger during the divisive 1972 primary season. Canin explores the era's sublimation of class, politics, sex, and sociology through the vantage point of Corey Sifter, a middle-aged man who worked on the campaign as a youth. Canin, now a professor at the Iowa Writers' Workshop, previously worked as a doctor in San Francisco before co-founding the SF Writers' Grotto in 1994.
