Film: Documentary Shelter: A Squatumentary
Hannah E. Dobbz explores the underground world of squatting in Shelter: A Squatumentary. Squatting has been a fact of DIY life ever since property law was invented, and a badge of bohemian cool since at least the '60s; absurd living costs, zoning laws, and the Man's iron fist continue to make it an attractive and defensible option, with the Bay Area's healthy punk culture and ever-worsening housing crisis contributing to a thriving local squat scene. Dobbz, a former representative of San Francisco's Indymedia, chronicles East Bay squatters from 2004 to 2007 in three filmed stories — "Hellarity House," "Banana House," and "Power Machine."
