Film McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971)

In an era of insane budgets and seamless CGI, it's worth taking a breath and enjoying the simple majesty of a film like Robert Altman's 1971 slice of indie-cinema heaven, McCabe & Mrs. Miller. Starring Warren Beatty, Julie Christie, and the songs of Leonard Cohen, this downtempo Western tells the story of an unlikely love affair between a con man and a madame in a turn-of-the-century Pacific Coast mining town. Featuring perhaps the most memorable and poetic chase scene on film (it takes place in a freak blizzard), Christie's Oscar-nominated performance, and a screenplay rife with caustic humor, it's easy to see why the film stays a classic through the generations.
