Music: Experimental William Hooker w/ the Weasel Walter Quartet

Though William Hooker's style is steeped in jazz, the drummer has shattered the preconceptions of that genre en route to absolute musical freedom. Hooker got his start playing with R&B groups like the Isley Brothers, but began chasing a more adventurous muse in college, studying the work of John Coltrane and composer Alban Berg. He's been a denizen of New York's downtown music scene since the '70s, collaborating with fellow avant-gardists like Sonic Youth guitarists Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo. For tonight's performance, he accompanies Oscar Micheaux's 1920 "race film," Symbol of the Unconquered. Local noise king Weasel Walter, another drummer who has transcended genre roots (metal and punk) opens with his fierce quintet.
