Roman Polanski may be best known in some circles as the director of such classics as Rosemary's Baby (1968) and Chinatown (1974), but to many others he's the European creep who fled the US just when he was about to be tried for the alleged rape of a 13-year-old girl. (Polanski couldn't even return stateside to receive his Oscar for 2003's The Pianist.) Now a compelling new documentary, Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired, pores over not only the case — all key players except the now-dead judge and Polanski himself are interviewed — but over the changing US cultural climate that increasingly has rendered him a greater pariah here than in Europe.
