Film: Documentary Harlan County U.S.A. (1976)

Barbara Kopple's searing documentary seems to encapsulate America's whole violent history of labor strife as it examines a 1973 Kentucky coal-miners' strike. The bluegrass soundtrack is filled with native twang, but Kopple's clear-eyed alignment with the strikers supersedes regionalism. Thirty-one years after it won an Oscar, Harlan County U.S.A.'s exploration of local economic systems might seem like a pre-globalization relic, but its depiction of social realities is timeless and still makes an impact. Definitely a documentary to see in the company of others, this screening benefits the Asian Pacific Islander Movement Building Network.
