More Flavor: Festival Fillmore Jazz Festival

The Fillmore district got a boost with the opening of Yoshi's, but not without a cost: like much of San Francisco, the Fillmore is now in the firm grip of gentrification. The Fillmore Jazz Festival salutes the neighborhood's rich history of African-American culture and music, from the times before the street was crammed with fancy condos. Onetime regulars like Ella Fitzgerald and Count Basie are gone, but summer idlers can still sample three stages' worth of jazz this Independence Day weekend. Randy Vincent, Bruce Foreman, and Lloyd Gregory square off for top guitar honors, the Contemporary Jazz Orchestra woos big-band lovers, and Sila and the Afrofunk Experience bring the party with danceable fusion.
