Kick the Balls is Alan Black's first book, though San Francisco literati might already recognize him from his bartending post at Edinburgh Castle. (The Scottish expat and friend of Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh helped establish the venue's popular reading series.) In his new memoir, Black uses soccer to make light of his private culture clashes. Having grown up playing the sport in an absurdly high-stakes atmosphere, he details his confrontations with both his own unfinished business and the game's second-class standing in America, after signing on to coach youth soccer.
