The Castro Theatre says…

Jacques Tati's jewel of a film gently skewers the mid-20th-century urban rat race. Tati's everyman, the loveable Monsieur Hulot, peregrinates through a Paris of sleek modernist office buildings and corporate showrooms, populated by gaggles of tourists and human cogs of industry. Made the same year that Guy Debord published Society of the Spectacle, Playtime also renders consumers as indistinguishable from the technological spectacle around them; they're just another component of Tati's Busby Berkeley-style choreography of the city. And yet, the viewer is no less immune to their dance.
