Ethnic identity in this country is fluid enough that it's difficult to parse the similarities and differences between, say, three neighbors in the same San Francisco apartment building. The artists in Root Division's exhibition Insider/Outsider — all first- and second-generation immigrants — explore the roles of the cultural insider and outsider, and the spaces in which they intersect. The juried show includes pieces by Aditya Dhawan, whose photography attempts to capture the complexity of our ephemeral lives; Juan Carlos Quintana's muted-color, mixed-media appropriations of American and Cuban pop iconography; and Stephanie Inagaki's unconventional self-portraits, which focus with melodramatic gravity on the cultural significance of her hair.
