Growing old has long been a stereotypical bugaboo for gay men. Thankfully, there are filmmakers like Jacques Nolot, whose semi-autobiographical Before I Forget is an unflinching portrait of an aging ex-gigolo in his autumn years. HIV-positive Pierre (Nolot) tallies up a life spent pursuing pleasure as estranged lovers pass away and his own physical fragility becomes harder to ignore. Seeking comfort in old friends and younger tricks, Pierre vacillates between flaunting his neediness and cloaking it in bourgeois nihilism. Nolot's no optimist, but in the tradition of Jean Genet, he grants Pierre his own abject means to continue on. And for that, Before I Forget deserves to be called brave.
