Kronos Quartet may be best known for their incendiary version of "Purple Haze" and high-profile collaborations with everyone from Steve Reich to Nine Inch Nails, but the group's modern take on the classical string ensemble sends it further afield in its stylistic pursuits. On albums like You've Stolen My Heart, Pieces of Africa, and Caravan, the San Francisco group has proven itself equally adept at interpreting Bollywood film music, works from Africa-based composers, and the interrelated scales of South America and the Middle East. Yerba Buena hosts the Quartet for a special performance as part of the Music Without Borders weekend, where they perform pieces from Ethiopia, Palestine, India, and Serbia.
