Last October 4th marked the beginning of "Sputnik Year," the 50th anniversary of the Soviet satellite's launch. The timing seems right for a look back to the late '50s; the era's media fearmongering, accelerating technological innovation, and ill-defined war against a nebulous group of enemies seem newly relevant today. Longtime documentarian David Hoffman, director of award-winning films including the critically acclaimed King, Murray (1969), chronicles the year following humanity's first foray into orbit, from the near-daily nuclear tests in space to the institution of NASA. The movie is based on the book Sputnik: The Shock of the Century, by Paul Dickson.
