Or, the Whale cribbed their name from the full title of Herman Melville's Moby-Dick, though the San Francisco group's yearning roots music conjures the heartland more than the open sea. Over the course of a couple of years, the outfit has graduated from tiny clubs to bigger halls that better accommodate its seven-piece thunder — the band makes quite a splash despite its sweet boy-girl harmonies. Purists might balk at Or, the Whale's blunt take on country, but even naysayers have a tough time shaking off the appeal of this energetic leviathan.
