Brothers Matt, Eli, and Josh Caterer — the core members of the pop-punk four-piece Smoking Popes — burst onto the Chicago indie-rock scene in the early '90s, touring with the likes of Green Day, Elastica, and Morrissey (the latter called them his "favorite American band"). Though the group disbanded in 1999, they were still beloved enough in 2005 to sell out a reunion show in just over a half hour. Now, they're set to release their first album in nearly a decade, turning out the same guitar-driven melodies, crooner vocals, and whip-smart lyrics that made them an influential proto-emo powerhouse.
