Pacific Film Archive Theater says…

François Truffaut followed The 400 Blows (1959) with this affectionate homage to the American detective film. The source material is David Goodis' novel Down There, though Truffaut transposes the action from Philadelphia to Paris. Singer/songwriter Charles Aznavour stars as Charlie, a piano man hiding out from his past and his delinquent brothers in a working-class tavern. Truffaut reportedly disliked Aznavour's voice enough to have another actor overdub the character, but a fine supporting cast and Raoul Coutard's CinemaScope lens work make Shoot the Piano Player a breezy delight. The Pacific Film Archive screens the film in a sparkling new 35mm print from Janus Films.
