The relationship between people and food is deeply affected by tradition, as well as by the social and political climate — noted food editor James Beard once wrote, "Food is our common ground, a universal experience." With that in mind, photojournalists Faith D'Aluisio and Peter Menzel co-authored Hungry Planet, a stunning exploration of the way families eat across the globe, from Mali to Japan. Universal issues of scarcity, globalization, and healthy eating are addressed in each startlingly humane shot.
