In his biopic of LA punk legends the Germs, Rodger Grossman faces a tough assignment: balancing perspective on spitfire singer Darby Crash's suicidal tendencies with meaty recreations of the band's raucous concerts. What We Do Is Secret succeeds on the latter front; it fleshes out the music with an evocative look at the LA punk scene, with its many seamy bands and clubs. Less convincing is the psychological profile of Crash as a self-immolating artist; Grossman seems to employ every cliché in the biopic book (confessional monologues, flashbacks, etc.) to get at the singer. Nonetheless, fans should stick it out for the performance mock-ups — and a surprising turn by Bijou Phillips as Germs bassist Lorna Doom.
