From epic billboards to small squares reading "Beware of Dog," signs have long fascinated photographers; Lee Friedlander in particular found an alternative American landscape in his surveys of homemade welcomes and warnings. Geoffrey Ellis and Andrew Martin Scott join this rich tradition with their show at Needles & Pens, though their photographs carry the melancholic sense that homemade, down-home culture is something of a relic due to the homogenizing power of modern media. Documenting this sort of lost landscape is also a photographic tradition, dating back at least as far as Eugène Atget's shots of pre-Haussmann Paris.
