Indonesian director Garin Nugroho's sumptuous retelling of "The Abduction of Sita" — an episode from Hindu epic The Ramayana — employs traditional shadow puppetry, stunning art direction, a Javanese-gamelan-inflected score, and modern dance to tell a timeless story of love betrayed and regained. Siti and Setio are happily married potters, but when Setio embarks on a long journey, Siti becomes the romantic quarry of village bigwig Ludiro (played to perfection by renowned dancer Eko Supriyanto). Nugroho's ambition is only limited by his sizable imagination, and it is a testament to his skills that the magical spectacle that unfolds before us never loses sight of the all-too-human characters at its center.
