After studying any one of Spencer Sweeney's works in his new show at Jack Hanley, it's clear that the New York painter has many more talents up his sleeve. Sweeney's a DJ mainstay at NYC's Santos Party House and a former member of performance-art troupe the Actress; appropriately, his canvases are the cathartic result of his various disciplines colliding head-on. His works' vibrant, aggressive marks, severed figures, and irreverent texts inhabit a gnarly jungle filled with delightfully prurient, if angry, humor.
