Cal Performances snags the hotly anticipated West Coast premiere of Mark Morris' adaptation of Sergey Prokofiev's ballet, based on the Bard's tragic romance. It's a little less tragic with a retrofitted happy ending, though the tumultuous eros of Morris' choreography keeps things interesting. His interpretation is based on musicologist Simon Morrison's restoration of Prokofiev's original score for the ballet, which Soviet bureaucrats retooled for its Leningrad debut in 1940. The double appeal of a "director's cut" of a Russian classic along with new work by Morris makes this a must for dance aficionados.
