Chicha might have been another lost artifact of the Amazon had it not been for a boom box on the streets of Lima. Taken by the music's kaleidoscopic combination of surf guitars, arabesque accordion scales, and Andean percussion, Oliver Conan, co-owner of Barbès Records, needed just one listen to start the Chicha excavation. Once the music of the Peruvian urban proletariat, Chicha is now reaching new ears thanks to Conan's Chicha Libre, a band that offers a globalized take on the Sonido Amazonico. With psychedelic adaptations of everything from electronica to Vivaldi, the group's unique instrumentation keeps audiences moving at all times. On behalf of the Amazon: welcome to the jungle.
