Part gutter/glitter fashion show, part drag Oscars, the Desperate Divas competition pits local gender benders against one another for a worthy cause. Sister Roma hosts the show's talent competition; Heklina hosts the evening-gown contest. There are awards for congeniality and fund-raising prowess, but the tiara is reserved for the queen who can keep her wig on while Donna Sachet asks challenging questions. Due to the models' unusual dimensions, all costumes are hand-sewn originals crafted by specialists like Fruitbomb, Mr. David, and Bea Dazzler. Sales from the event's 2009 calendar benefit the AIDS Housing Alliance, which provides emergency housing assistance to people living with HIV.
