With Evan Bissell's effusive portraits hung like billboards across the city, it's impossible to separate somewhere in advance of nowhere from the urban landscapes it inhabits. His subjects are students of Youth Speaks, a Bay Area education and arts nonprofit, and nowhere is a multi-tiered exhibition that combines poetry, painting, multimedia, and outreach on behalf of local arts groups. While all of Bissell's paintings reveal a faith that community can provide avenues to self-actualization and empowerment, Bissell's uncommon admiration for his students emerges as the true subject of the exhibition. After all, it's easiest to celebrate our neighbors.
