These mad scientists of sound create the most gorgeous noise since, well, any of their previous projects. A convocation of the insouciant spirits who introduced punk rock to the high-minded art world a couple decades ago, Phantom Orchard is a partnership between DNA-drummer-turned-electronics-maestro Ikue Mori and improv harpist Zeena Parkins. Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon, benevolent queen of gracefully aging art-rockers, brings along special guests Yoshimi (the robot-battling drum phenom of Boredoms, OOIOO, and Gordon's punky side project, Free Kitten) and Trevor Dunn (bassist for Mr. Bungle and Fantômas). Both combos are patient, challenging, and — above all — lovely.
