The fanciful shapes and feline curves in Paul Klee's figures can sometimes disguise the painter's intellectual rigor, but his forays into the emotional substance of abstract colors and lines were nothing less than thorough. Paul Klee's Pedagogical Sketchbook at SFMOMA offers a view of the Swiss artist's drafting table, with works-in-progress demonstrating the rigorous reworking behind his pleasing forms. Recently, the museum showed musically-inspired Klee pieces, alongside watercolors and drawings by Devendra Banhart. While it was an inspired pairing, the current show offers a far richer taste of this ineffable artist. Keep Klee's famous dictum in your pocket as you stroll the galleries: "A line is a dot going for a walk."
