Long described as a more pastoral Low, New York's Ida have recently been pushing their trademark slowcore into folksier terrain. Their new album was recorded in Levon Helm's studio, and tonight, the band joins outsider-folkie Michael Hurley, acting as his backing band for this special tour. Hurley, who also goes by the wooly alter-ego Snock, has been spinning his strange song-poems since the mid-'60s. The Oregon troubadour never achieved the celebrity of his folk-revival peers, but he's hardly gone unappreciated — among his most fervent admirers are Devendra Banhart and Vetiver's Andy Cabic, who released Hurley's recent album Ancestral Swamp on their Gnomonsong label.
