Andy Warhol: Good For the Jews?
-
- Josh Kornbluth, Photo: Kira Sugarman, Courtesy of the Contemporary Jewish Museum, San Francisco.
It should come as no surprise that monologuist Josh Kornbluth, that most famous of red diaper babies, would run wild with the delicious opportunities presented by Andy Warhol's Ten Portraits of Jews of the Twentieth Century, now on exhibit at the Contemporary Jewish Museum. The creative force behind Love & Taxes and Ben Franklin: Unplugged toys with fantastical, humorous, and often spot-on connections between eminent personas like Franz Kafka, Golda Meir, and Gertrude Stein. Employing a dizzying mix of autobiographical detail, carefully constructed philosophy, and doggedly thorough research, the piece confronts big-ticket concerns, such as the flexibility of identity and the uneasy dialogue between politics and art.
