Hiroshi Teshigahara's homage to Antonio Gaudí is, like the Spanish architect's own work, as much about form as it is about function. Gaudí — whose work is at turns described as art nouveau, surreal, and psychedelic — created buildings characterized by their biomorphic shapes, hallucinatory textures, and manic use of color. Teshigahara's sweeping shots of these turn-of-the-century constructions include the fantastical Palau Güell, the reef-like facade of Casa Batlló, and the infamously unfinished Sagrada Familia. With a limited narrative and a haunting soundtrack by Toru Takemitsu, the film mirrors the visual opulence of the works themselves.
