Azar Nafisi

Azar Nafisi has a penchant for ruffling the establishment's feathers, whether it's those of the academic lit community or the Islamic Republic of Iran. The author of the bestselling Reading Lolita in Tehran — an account of a women's book club she led that discussed banned Western works — was expelled from university teaching for refusing to wear a veil, and her workshops for female students were alternately dismissed and attacked by the government. While many in literary circles embraced her unique voice, charges of neo-conservatism, Orientalism, and intellectual absolutism have also plagued her. Tonight, she speaks out on these controversies, as well as her appropriately titled new memoir, Things I've Been Silent About: Memories.
