The Berlin & Beyond Film Festival features the best new cinema from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Showcasing narratives, documentaries, shorts, and restored classics, this year's highlights include the SF premiere of Wim Wenders' Palermo Shooting — about a famous photographer's sojourn to Italy — as well as a lecture on Hollywood's secret history of German-language filmmaking, and Josef von Sternberg's Deitrich-launching talkie The Blue Angel (1930). The festival kicks off with Doris Dörrie's Cherry Blossoms, a bittersweet tale of a midlife crisis that serves as a sort of transcontinental companion piece to Yasujiro Ozu's Tokyo Story.
