Japan Dance Now is a composite look at a national choreography fascinated with glossy fashion, satirical humor, and the futuristic possibilities of technology. Baby Q founder Yoko Higashino contributes an over-the-top mix of live electronica, choppy video feeds, and incisive interpretations of the animalistic urges that underlie human interaction. All-female ensemble Sennichimae Blue Sky Dance Club gyrates slowly and jaggedly in white skinsuits to flashes of static noise, before exploding into synchronized spasms; the effect can be likened to leaves gently cascading across a frozen river, at once organic and frigidly mechanical. In wildly varying ways, tonight's works all promise to be stingingly fresh and sublimely expansive.
