Chantal Akerman's films pass slowly, allowing viewers the necessary time to luxuriate in the depth of her work. The Belgian auteur packs a slow-boiling intensity into each frame, and in the process picks apart traditional domestic roles, the transience of memory, and the purported immutability of political realities. SFMOMA's retrospective covers the entirety of her oeuvre, from the seminal Jeanne Dielman, 23 Quai de Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles (1975) — a finely detailed, super-realist study of a woman's daily routine that is by turns disturbingly voyeuristic and comfortably attentive — to Là-bas (2006), a documentary take on the exile and isolation inherent in being a foreigner.
