Don't be misled by its parenthetical title — the early 20th-century ancestor of the Hitachi Magic Wand is only one link in award-winning playwright Sarah Ruhl's latest dazzler, which makes its world premiere at the Berkeley Rep. Ruhl's plays always convey the shock and sweet surprise of her characters' transformations with a deftness that sidesteps any belabored psychologizing; In the Next Room is no exception, but this unconventional Victorian comedy of errors also enfolds the advent of electricity, the patholozigation of women's sexuality as hysteria, and post-Reconstruction race relations. All this, while simultaneously charting its corseted women and upstanding mens' rediscovery of the necessities of the human touch and heart — even if by way of a vibrating prosthesis.
