Shepard Fairey's Obama poster may have made the cover of Time, but street art giant Ron English's campaign portrait — which depicted the President-elect in Lincoln drag — was just as iconic. Like so much of his graffiti-inspired art, English's fusion of Obama with the president he has so often invoked as a guiding light combined humor with social commentary in a visually arresting package. The paintings in Mythographic Vicissitudes chart similar territory, with English using an array of mythological and religious figures — Bigfoot, Nessie, and Jesus all make appearances — as foils in his de Tocquevilleian assessment of contemporary American culture.
